HISTORY OF THE COMPANY
National Safe has been a leading manufacturer in the physical security equipment industry for over 40 years. The company was started in 1968 and grew to be a substantial manufacturer and supplier of physical security equipment. Sold to the John H. Harland Company, a check printer, in 1976, it continued operating until 1985 when Harland's management decided that manufacturing did not fit their long term plans. The company was put up for sale.
Mr. Roy Smith purchased National Safe from Harland and the company was reorganized and moved to a location in Clearwater, Florida. Mr. Smith completely redesigned National Safe's product lines to effectively compete in the industry. He then moved the company to its present location in St. Petersburg, Florida, in the early 1990's.
In 1996, the company was bought by Peter Christiano and Roger Richards and re-named ArCee Capital Corporation. Yet, the company continued to do business as National Safe. Within four years, Mr. Richards bought out his partner and continued to operate National Safe until selling the assets of the company to its present owner, Sharon Hart, in May of 2008. National Safe Co. of America, Inc., d.b.a. National Safe, continues to be located in St. Petersburg, Florida.
PRESENT OWNERSHIP
Sharon Hart's career began in purchasing with Severance Tool, located in Saginaw, Michigan. Over the years she has directly supervised welding, machining, industrial maintenance, electronics and numerous other related areas. She has worked closely with many industry giants, including Bridgeport, Haas Automation, and the American Welding Society, to name just a few. Dr. Hart was instrumental in the early development of the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) for Southwest Wisconsin. MEP's are now located across the US and specifically serve small to medium sized manufacturing companies. Their purpose is to help these companies become more competitive and cost effective.
Prior to taking over the reins at National Safe, Dr. Hart was in higher education. For ten years she led two different public colleges in Connecticut and North Dakota. Both of these were leaders in preparing graduates for the global workplace. In addition, she served as Governor Hoeven's (ND) higher education appointment to the North Dakota Workforce Development Council and was appointed by U.S. Senator Dorgan to the North Dakota Red River Valley Research Corridor. Additionally, she has served on numerous Boards, including the Board of Editors for The Journal of Technology Studies, the Association of Diesel Specialists (ADS), the American Technical Education Association, the National Council on Occupational Education, the Wahpeton Chamber of Commerce (president) and the Middlesex County (CT) Chamber of Commerce, to name just a few. With a Ph.D. in Technical Education, Dr. Hart has also served as a Fulbright-Hayes Scholar to India and has been credited for developing numerous partnerships with colleges and businesses around the globe.
For the St. Petersburg area, having a female owned manufacturing business is quite unique. According to the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce, Hart is the only female-owned manufacturing company with membership in their Chamber. Across the United States, females own only a very small representation in manufacturing (2%), according to the most recently published U.S. Census, 1997.
